If you're a fan of the offense, Monday night in Green Bay was ugly.If defense is your thing, this is a thing of beauty.

If you're a die-hard fan, it's green on green on Monday night. If your protection is yours, it was beautiful.

Two of the best teams in the NFC met on a chilly night at Lambeau Field, and the Philadelphia Eagles edged out the Green Bay Packers 10-7.

Every win in the hotly contested NFC is important: According to Analytics, the Eagles' chance of capturing the No. 1 seed increased to 33 percent with the win;losses would have decreased to 12 percent.

The defense kept the odds in favor of the defending champions. The Eagles' bouncy passing made quarterback Jordan Love uncomfortable all night, helping hold the Packers scoreless through three quarters for just the third time under Matt LaFleur.

Philadelphia Eagles (7-2)

Turning point: Jalen Hurts took a 3-0 lead in the fourth quarter and found Saquon Barkley on a third-and-7 pass, which Barkley converted for a 41-yard score down the left sideline. On the next play, Hurts found Smith in the end zone for a 36-yard score.

Most surprising performance: Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio gave edge rusher Jalen Phillips a major role in his first game as an Eagle, and Phillips delivered big time.Phillips, acquired from the Miami Dolphins for a third-round pick before last week's trade deadline, produced seven QB pressures, two QB hits and six tackles. He stuffed Josh Jacobs on fourth-and-1 with 1:30 left, causing him to fumble. There was a fumble that helped Philly secure the victory. The Eagles have added something on the defensive front with the addition of Phillips and the return of Nolan Smith Jr. from a triceps injury.

Biggest hole in the game plan: Offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo has played conservatively most of the time, especially on third down. There have been several occasions where Philadelphia has chosen to go for it on third and long. The Eagles are up to 29 three-point drives resulting in a punt this season, second most in the NFL behind the Broncos (34).- Tim McManus

Next game: vs. Detroit Lions (8:20 p.m. ET, Sunday, NBC)

Green Bay Pusers (5-3-1)

This play will not appear on any offensive instruction tape.In fact, the Packers might want to burn him.

In one of Green Bay Coach Matt Lafleur's most offensive performances, his team scored just 5:49 into the fourth quarter.

The Packers have never been shutout under LaFleur, and it was just the third time they've been held scoreless in three quarters in the coach's tenure. One of those was Jordan Love's first career start, replacing Aaron Rodgers in 2021 against the Chiefs. The other came in 2023 against the Saints, and the Packers came back to win.

In the Saints game, they rallied from a 17-0 deficit to win 18-17.Monday's deficit wasn't nearly as big. They trailed 10-0 until running back Josh Jacobs finally put the Packers on the table with a 6-yard touchdown run to complete their first scoring drive.

This comes after the Packers managed just 13 points last week in an upset at home to the Panthers.

The loss was particularly devastating in the standings, dropping the Packers (5-3-1) from first to third in the NFC North.

Stats to know: Research shows Packers receivers have had one dropped pass all season on Monday night. They made it two in a row in the third quarter against the Eagles.First, Romeo Doubs couldn't carry the ball on third-and-9 up the middle, and on the next play the Packers had 4th-and-out at the Eagles' 41 and Bo Melton bounced the ball off his chest.

Then on the Packers' final drive, Dontayvion Wicks threw another one, giving them three on the night.Including all players, the Packers came into Monday's game with five total drops, four by non-receivers.

Biggest hole in game plan: The Packers couldn't find a way to repeat what they lost last week when tight end Tucker Kraft was out for the season with a torn ACL.In fact, for most of the game, LaFleur went with a heavy challenge sheet, limiting Love's passing options. It looked more like the game plan he used when Love sat out two games into the season with a knee injury, and LaFleur limited Malik Willis' shooting opportunities.

Trend to watch: For the second straight game, coordinator Jeff Hafley's unit gave the team a chance to win.A week after losing 16-13 to the Panthers, they held the Eagles by looking beyond the game. The Packers gave up their first score of the game on a field goal midway through the third quarter and didn't let up until the early going. They had 16 or fewer points in all three losses. They are now 1-3 when giving up 16 or fewer points this season, their most loss since 1978, according to the survey.-- Rob Demovsky
