Week 9 shuffles the top of the NFL deck as we begin to confidently pick a true Super Bowl contender.
Four of the five Football Power Index (FPI) favorites to win this title lost on Sunday.The only top-five team to make it through the weekend unscathed is the Eagles, who have a bye. And after Sunday's string of upsets, each team has a record minimum of two losses heading into week 9. This has only happened once in the last 35 years, in 2010. A season in which the eventual Super Bowl Champion Packers finished the regular season as the NFC's sixth seed.

It became a running gag.After tying the best one-point game record we've seen in a single season in 2024, the Chiefs have now lost all four of their games decided by seven points or less this season.Sunday's 28-21 loss to the Bills wasn't as clean as the final score indicated, but after Buffalo's Matt Prater kicked a 52-yard field goal to keep the game alive, you could feel the panic and fatalism of what was sure to happen next on television.Twenty-two seconds and no time-time?For Patrick Mahomes?Maybe start preparing for overtime now.
Instead, the Bills quickly wrapped up their fifth regular-season win over Mahomes and the Chiefs in six tries, bringing him down twice on the final three pass attempts of the game.The story was the pressure and what it did to Mahomes, who had a sub-50% completion percentage in a game for the first time as a professional quarterback, going just 15-of-34 for 250 yards without passing.touchdowns and an interception.After years of averaging the shortest passing distance or something close to it, Mahomes' average throw on Sunday traveled more than 14 yards in the air, the deepest average throw distance of his career.
The Bills pressured Mahomes on more than 52 percent of his passes, according to NFL Next Generation Stats, the fifth-highest pressure percentage Mahomes has faced in his storied career.On Sunday, he went 3-of-16 for 61 yards and a touchdown under pressure, throwing all three completions to Travis Kelce, who Mahomes still trusts most when in trouble.Sean McDermott and the Bills created all that pressure despite rushing Mahomes just three times all day.
But that was Brandon Beane's game.The Bulls' general manager was criticized by home fans this season in October for failing to add Josh Allen this spring and summer without Buffalo's only top player injured and missing Joshua Palmer.I ranked the Bulls 28th in my player rankings this year, concerned that Buffalo doesn't have a WR that can get away from man coverage.Or in situations where the Bills need a big play.It's basically "against elders" code.

The Chiefs' defense also struggled with the changing schemes of the Bills' offense.Last season, when these two teams played, the Bills tended to play shotgun or pistol with about two-thirds of their offensive snaps, which is in line with their seasonal pace.There's nothing wrong with doing that, especially since Allen and the quarterbacks he threatens as part of the running game are out of the picture.This also creates slightly easier routes for the quarterback to make tackles, limits some of the running game concepts they can run, and makes it easier to diagnose plays on the quarterback.
The league as a whole has changed quite a bit with going down under centers, but among teams with the same coordinators and quarterbacks, no one has done more than the Bills, going under their offensive centers this season.On Sunday, they were under center about 58% of the time, and Allen's offense was successful on 62% of those snaps.That was up from 44% without a gun.
The Chiefs don't yet have an answer for a team that can pass under center.Steve Spagnuolo's defense is fourth in the league in EPA per play against rifle or pistol shooting, but drops to 31st when the team is under center.The easiest way for the Chiefs to overcome this would be to take an early lead, make the other team one-dimensional with their passing game, and force them to work in the shotgun, but that wasn't the case against the Bills.

After playing at an MVP level through the first two months of the season for the most surprising team in the league, Jones had one of his worst games as a pro on Sunday.Against a Steelers defense that has struggled to stop anyone all season, Jones accounted for five of Indianapolis' six turnovers in Pittsburgh, throwing three interceptions and losing two touchdowns.He ended up throwing for 342 yards, but it took him a whopping 50 passing attempts to get there, as the Steelers also sacked him five times.

Is this too simplistic an explanation for the loss?Yes.The game actually started well for the Colts as Jones hit Alec Pierce for a couple of long completions and Indy converted a pair of fourth downs with Jones gaining 1 yard on second down.After that, the Steelers ended up with a three-and-out, and while Josh Downs fumbled the punt return, the Colts held on and got the ball back.Indy then put together a 17-play drive, including a fourth-and-1 fake punt for a first down.
What seems to be a game The chefs controlled the search and quickly became confused because of the turn.T.J.Watt gets down to Braden Smith to meet Jones and get the ball back.After the Steolers' touchdown on the drive, Jones tried to work both sides of the field and didn't see Payton Wilking.The steacklers quickly buried a short field, and when Jones popped up it was what should have been 42-Yariapopolis on another three-and-out drive.
When they got the ball again, the Steelers smelled blood.Jones converted a fourth-and-1, but Alex Highsmith and Joey Porter Jr.they sacked him on consecutive plays to force another punt.Jones converted another fourth-down on the next drive, but tried to throw a quick screen to his slot receiver on second-and-1, and Wilson lofted the pass into the air.Unfortunately, Jack Sawyer intercepted it.The Steelers scored a touchdown on that drive to go up 24–7, and it turned the Colts into a one-dimensional offense the rest of the way.
More than anything else, if you're looking for a reason why Jones struggled so much, I'd point to the play of the game and the lack of play.Before Sunday, Jones had thrown just 27.3 percent of his completions, the second-lowest percentage in the league behind Sam Darnold, another quarterback who benefits from being in favorable game situations.Jonathan Taylor, play-action, RPO game and to rely on the threat of the run to create conflict for the defense.Those issues prevented opponents from getting exotic looks at Jones and limited his ability to rush the quarterback.And to his credit, Jones has done a good job of running the offense by getting the ball out quickly and knocking down throws, which have been problems with the Giants.
Held back for several days, Jones was stuck in a clear lack of speed against Pittsburgh's Pass rush.The steelers did a good job of limiting Taylor's burst and held him to 45 yards on 14 carries.They let Jones through on the move, as he failed to attempt a pass from the pocket.And with game-making more of the picture, the game continues.Jones has to win the pocket magnet as a pass rusher, where the kids the Colts don't want to run him.
Regardless, the Colts defense should be applauded for keeping the team in the competition.The Steelers didn't score on that short field after the muffed punt, but they did score touchdowns on two drives starting from their own 44-yard line and the other from the Indianapolis 14-yard line.They added a field goal on the opening possession from the Indy 34-yard line and lost a fumble on another drive that started in Colts territory.The Steelers' average possession Sunday was this: It started with just 53 yards for a touchdown, the team's second-best starting position in a game this season.
Steelers fans (and players) who have heard their defense derided in recent weeks will have proof that even a frustrating unit turns things around.It was the best game of the season for a Steelers rookie. While Highsmith put 10 Pittsburgh pressures on Jones in the absence of DeShon Elliott (knee), the Steelers inserted newly acquired safety Kyle Dugger into the lineup. While the former Patriot played 72 of 74 snaps, Jaylen Ramsey moved from cornerback to full-time free safety and replaced Juan Thornhill on the bench. And the Steelers didn't allow a single completion.on a 20-yard toss in the air.

Has it never been easier for packages?After beating the Lions and Chiefs to start the season, Matt Lafley's team lost to the Browns at home and lost a tie with the Cowboys.Week 8 brought a comprehensive win from the Bowlers and Jordan in a series of love runs, and the Panthers came to town, and the Packers hope the Packers can make it four games before the game."Monday Night Football" vs. the hunks next week.

Dave Canales and Carolina deserve credit for what they did to win this game.Canales made a tough decision after last week, essentially removing Chuba Hubbard from a 50-50 runningback rotation to give Rico Dowdle the starting role, even though the organization paid Hubbard far more for an extension last winter than it paid Dowdle for his one-year deal this spring.Dowdle was the more productive player and led the Packers in rushing for 130 yards.on 25 carries.According to Next Gen Stats, he generated 44 yards above expectations (RYOE), bringing his season total to 172, third in the league behind Cook and Taylor.
Canales also made an important decision early in the match that yielded results later.The Panthers went into the match with the idea that it would allow them to choose which goals to defend in the second half.The wind was blowing up to 30 mph at Lambeau Field and that made a big difference when Ryan Fitzgerald's game-winning shot came with the wind behind the rookie in the fourth quarter.

Detroit's hold on the rest of the NFC North is increasingly shaky. After going 5-1 against the Packers and Vikings the past two years, the Lions have lost their first games against their two division brothers in 2025. And while this game was closer than the Week 1 loss to the Packers, the story of how the Vikings held off the Lions and their high-powered offense was similar.
To stop the lions, start with defense.The Vikings have discovered a column in their defensive machine, and I have to rely on what they have accomplished when making decisions.His best mana Sunday of the year ended the sack and two matches for the loss of the girls and took off the jahmir crest.
