Former football coach John Beam, a beloved Bay Area character featured in the Netflix series "Last Chance for You," was shot and killed Thursday on the Laney College campus in Oakland, according to affiliate KPIX.
Police are investigating a shooting that happened just before noon on the college's athletic field, involving Laney.Beam remains the school's athletic director after retiring as head football coach.
Authorities have not detailed Beam’s condition. The Oakland Police Department said responding officers discovered a man with gunshot wounds, and medics transferred him to the hospital.
Police have not given a motive for the shooting, and no suspect has been identified.
Beam starred in the 2020 season of the Netflix documentary series Last Chance You, a documentary about community college athletes trying to turn their lives around.
He is well respected in the Bay area after more than four decades of teaching at both colleges and universities.
Laney College was placed on lockdown after reports of a shooting and an investigation, as was the case.The campus was closed on Thursday.
"This is a terrible time for our community," the Peralta Community College District said in a statement.
"The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we keep them - and their loved ones - in our hearts at this difficult time."

The incident was the shooting at a local school in Oakland in two days.
On Wednesday, a youth was shot and two arrested at Skyline High School, police said.The youth, who was shot, was taken to hospital and was in stable condition.
"It's scary," Lee said."Schools should be the safest places in our city. Now we need guns off our streets."
