Hurts' Fifth and Final Third Team Loss
In a slippery, error-filled Monday Night Ball game, the Casars beat the Philadelphia Eagles 22-19 in overtime.
The game featured eight turnovers, eight sacks, 13 penalties and a missed field goal. The teams combined to average just 4.7 yards per play, and that number included a 52-yard touchdown run. They completed just 50% of their passes, were a combined 11 of 32 on third downs and were just 11 of 27 for points.Only two of those scoring drives ended in touchdowns.landing.
Despite this chaos, the Chargers prevailed, thanks in large part to their defense.Jesse Minter's unit accounted for five of eight takeaways; he intercepted Jalen Hurts four times and forced a fumble.(The fumble occurred on the same play as an interception, making Hurts the first player since at least 1978 to fumble twice in a game, according to ESPN.) DeShawn Hand, Donte Jackson, Cam Hart and Tony Jefferson each recorded one catch, and Los Angeles intercepted Hurts twice as many times as it had all season into the night.
Offensively, the Chargers endured an anemic performance, averaging just 3.9 yards per play.Playing through a broken bone in his hand that required surgery just a week ago, Justin Herbert completed 12 of 26 passes for 139 yards, a touchdown and an interception. However, he led the team in rushing with 66 yards on 10 carries, while Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal were largely held in check.
Hampton, returning from a broken ankle suffered in week 5, scored for L.A. Cameron Dicker made field goals of 45, 34, 31, 46 and 54.
The Eagles moved the ball well overall, but were hampered by mistakes.Hurts' five turnovers were a big reason, but Philadelphia also missed a field goal, and Jordan Mailata caught a penalty to wipe the touchdown off the board.Saquon Barkley's 52-yard touchdown run opened the fourth quarter and briefly gave Philadelphia its first lead, but the Eagles twice allowed the Chargers to score game-tying field goals to force overtime.
In overtime, long shots by Herbert and Hampton set up Decker's fifth field goal. The Eagles crossed midfield on the next drive and scored the fourth on a penalty kick, but their chance to win ended when Hart's pass to Jahan Dotson was blocked by Hart and intercepted by Jefferson to seal the victory for Los Angeles.
Wild drama of the year?
Here's the streak where Hurts turned the ball over twice in one game.
If you're counting, it's a defensive attack that leaves the line in coverage, cuts the route and gets away with a pick. The defensive lineman is then stripped of the ball, and it is recovered by the quarterback who threw the pick. And the quarterback goes back to the team to intercept itTwo turnovers on one playThings that are not real
Laws overcome mistakes
The Eagles weren't the only ones giving the ball away here.Herbert stopped once and shot the ball again.(He also had another fumble that was fortunately recovered on offense).Da'Shawn Hand, seen above, returned the ball to the Eagles after Hurts was stopped, only for the Chargers to recover it from Hurts after he took a hit and was stripped.
Los Angeles allowed Herbert to be sacked seven times, the most sacks in any game of his NFL career. He was forced on over 68 percent of his sacks, according to Next Gen Stats, and was running for his life all night. That contributed to an average of just 5.3 yards per attempt while completing less than half of his passes.Including sacks, the Chargers averaged just 3.2 net yards per pass.
Philly's offense is broken
While the dodge moves the ball more efficiently than the pass, no mistake is a good matchup for them. They had a couple of big plays - a yard run by Masqui's baby error.
Banks' 19 carries for his share of the release, he went just 70 yards - an average of 3.7 points per carry. And that includes two proper runs in the first quarter. He had a lot of tackles on the night, which were connected behind the line of scrimmage because the offensive line didn't give him any way to fly.
Damages are not only in the field, but also in your field of vision to make them throw a check. He went deep down the field on the first swing of the game.Dotson rolled over the middle and took over early in the second quarter and still had two touchdowns the rest of the game.
It's a bad result when you're hitting 6.0 cores per attempt and getting four interceptions, but this line probably doesn't justify the current level of past play. And the running game isn't much better.
The overall offense is disastrous and has a success rate below 30 percent. The Eagles are now 28 on the offensive end of the season. They are one thing, they need new ideas and/or better execution, they need to be fast.
The Chargers are 9-4 after the win and move into fifth place in the AFC.If they lose, they will fall behind the Colts and the Chiefs in the playoff picture.Oh, they remain two games up in the AFC West and have a shot at one of the playoff spots. They have a tough schedule, with the Chiefs, Hogs and Broncos all year.
Philly is now 8-5 and remains in third place in the NFC even after this loss. The Eagles are 1.5 games ahead of the 6-6-1 Cowboys for the division lead, and a division win could be their only path to a playoff spot as the team is the conference's seventh-ranked 9-4 Bears. The Eagles have a much softer running schedule than the Chargers, with games against the Raiders, Commanders, Bills and Commanders again, but are now on a three-game losing streak and look completely broken, so anything can happen here.
