Raiders place Max Crosby on injured reserve ending Star Pass players season - The Athletic

Crosby, who has missed just five games of his seven-year career with the Raiders, has left the club after hearing he would not be playing on Sunday.

Las Vegas Raiders star pass rusher Max Crosby's season is over.

The Raiders have placed Crosby on injured reserve with a knee injury that will affect the rest of 2025, the team said Saturday, meaning he will miss the team's final two games, starting with Sunday's home opener against the New York Giants.

"After thoughtful consideration and careful consultation with several senior medical experts, it was determined that this decision is in the best interest of the team and players," the Raiders said in a statement on social media.

Raiders head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Friday that Crosby, despite the seventh-year veteran's back, will miss Sunday's game with a knee injury.Carroll said Crosby left the facility immediately after receiving the news.Asked if he was angry when he left, Carroll said Crosby's reaction, considering his opponent, was "just what you think he's going to do and what he has to do."

"I agree with him 1,000 percent about the way he responded and I (would have responded) the same way and I understand," Carroll said."We've given it some thought and we believe we've come up with the right decision for his interim management."

Crosby's absence precedes a critical Week 17 game against the Giants, a matchup between teams with the worst records in the NFL (2-13), with the loser getting the inside track to the top pick.No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Raiders had already waived star tight end Brock Bowers and safety Jeremy Chinn for the season before Carroll broke the news to Crosby on Friday.

"He doesn't want to receive news like this. And I don't want to hear this kind of news," Carroll told reporters."... If we let him go, he'll get out of there. And he won't hesitate. But he knew he was under attack, so he said, "I want to get out of here," and I said, "Yes, get out of here," and he left."

Crosby has been on the Raiders' injury report since Week 12 with a knee injury after a 33-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on "Monday Night Football," but has not missed a game this season.

"He's been fighting this thing for nine weeks since (the) Kansas City (game)," Carroll said."Every week, he's done everything you'd expect him to do to play and he's done it. And they've worked with him to get it. But after the evaluation we did on Monday or Tuesday, when it happened, it looked awful."

Crosby is considered either limited or full-time during the first two weeks of his knee injury.

The 28-year-old has collected 10 sacks in 15 games this season, along with two forced fumbles and an interception. He was recently selected to the Pro Bowl, along with fellow offensive linemen Will Anderson Jr. and Myles Garrett. Crosby, who entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Raiders in 2019, missed his first two seasons but has been honored in each of the past five seasons.

Durability is one of the hallmarks of Crosby's career. He played in every game in his first five years with the Raiders and missed just five games in 2024 while dealing with a lingering ankle injury that ultimately ended his season in Week 15 and required surgery.

"Yeah, to be honest with the s——— about my choice," Crosby said Tuesday during the Raiders' press conference."I don't play with that. It's not my job. My job is to be the best defensive end in the world. That's what I focus on every day. Being a good leader, making an impact. Being the right guy for my team."
